The Programs
The “I Love U Guys” Foundation’s programs for crisis response and post-crisis reunification are used in more than 40,000 schools, districts, departments, agencies, organizations and communities around the world. They are created through the research-based best practices of school administrators, psychologists, public space safety experts, families, and first responders. We’re a powerful conduit uniting this work.

The “I Love U Guys” Foundation team of trainers all have personal and professional experience with school and public safety. Through their experiences, our trainings come to life in a way that can only be felt through people who’ve been there.

Twice a year the Foundation hosts its national conference. The Briefings is a nationally-recognized school and community safety symposium suited for educators, school safety teams, first responders, emergency and risk managers, victim advocates, mental health professionals and community members.

Developed hand-in-hand with school administrators, psychologists, public space safety experts, families, and first responders, our programs are both research and experience-based.

The Standard Response Protocol
The Standard Response Protocol (SRP) provides consistent, clear, shared language and actions among all students, staff and first responders for all hazards. It is action based, and allows organizations, first responders, students, and parents to share a specific vocabulary for quick and coordinated action. It also acts as a tool for training which develops the muscle memory necessary to respond appropriately in moments of crisis.
The SRP is based on five actions: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter.
The Standard Reunification Method
Reunifying students with parents or guardians is a critical component of emergency response, but one that is often overlooked. The Standard Reunification Method (SRM) provides school and district safety teams with proven methods to plan, practice, and achieve a successful reunification amid what can be chaotic and stressful circumstances.
SRM – Reunification Exercise
The Standard Reunification Method – Reunification Exercise (SRM-REx) is intended to show school, district and emergency response personnel what capabilities there are for handling, organizing, and reunifying the staff and students that have experienced an emergent event that was man-made, technological, or natural.
Working with local emergency managers, law enforcement, fire and EMS, and district personnel, we help craft and conduct an exercise that tests your capacity for a successful reunification.

Our trainers’ stories from inside and behind school crises illustrate the importance of planning and preparing, while our easy-to-learn protocols and methods show you how.

This is a full day training, with the expected outcome that participants will have the ability to perform classroom training in the Standard Response Protocol and the Standard Reunification Method, implement the program, train teams, and handle advanced questions.
Completion of the workshop allows attendees to conduct training within their organization for two (2) years. After two years, the individual must attend another Train the Trainer Workshop, as materials are updated periodically. Please note:
- Trainers are not able to train others to become trainers.
- Trainers are not able to train people at other districts, agencies, organizations.
- Trainers are not able to sell their services or otherwise profit from training others.
SRM-REx Reunification Exercise
This 2-day course offers a day in the classroom and a day in the field, taking you through focused classroom training, tabletop discussions, and functional reunification exercises. All stakeholders in reunification are encouraged to take part in this exercise including district and school staff, public safety, emergency managers, mental health professionals, and community leaders.
Together-REx (T-REx)
School safety software providers have utilized the Standard Reunification Method in their applications for years. We are piloting a new program with Raptor Technologies, T-REx (yes, we know, but we couldn’t resist). T-REx is a unique opportunity to learn the practical mechanics of the SRM and how it works using mobile and desktop technology.
T-REx follows the same agenda as the 2-day SRM-REx workshop and functional exercises, with the added bonus of seeing how the process works with technology.

The Briefings
The Briefings are nationally-recognized school and community safety symposiums that explore timely topics in school and community safety, as well as training on the Standard Response Protocol and Standard Reunification Method. While the Briefings’ historical roots are in Colorado, we’re branching out with Regional Briefings around the country. Stay tuned, stay informed.

Live Remote Training
Available in breakout, half-day, and full-day formats, we can deliver any of our in-person training online. Not your typical Zoom meeting, we’ve invested in high-definition cameras, microphones and software to live stream our training events.

The Black Swan
John-Michael Keyes connects the violent incident at Platte Canyon High School with the Black Swan Theory of improbable events. How the aftermath of tragedy is also in that category: that outcomes and programs of The “I Love U Guys” Foundation are unpredictably positive.

Arapahoe High Debrief – Law Enforcement
When the day we prepare and train for arrives, there are things we don’t expect. In this session, James Englert provides first-hand details of the shooting at Arapahoe High School from the perspective of a school resource officer (SRO) on scene.
Platte Canyon Debrief – Civilian
The tragic events on September 27th 2006 at Platte Canyon High School brought two unlikely people together: A.J. DeAndrea who devised and executed the tactical plan for the hostage rescue, and John-Michael Keyes who lost his daughter, Emily. The riveting point-counterpoint of their actions on that day are only part of the story.

This presentation gives a deep dive of the events and lessons learned at Platte Canyon High School from the law enforcement perspective. A.J. The Briefings
The Briefings are a nationally recognized school and community safety symposium held twice a year. We explore timely topics such as being prepared for small or large incidents, threat management, lessons learned from prior incidents, recovery after a traumatic experience, as well as training on the Standard Response Protocol and Standard Reunification Method.
Each event is unique offering the stories, insights, next steps and lessons learned across the entire spectrum of safety. From prevention through recovery, leading experts, practitioners and survivors bring you effective methods for keeping schools and communities safe. Participants take away actionable insights they can implement immediately
Our goal with The Briefings is to bring together an array of experts to share their knowledge and experience so we can learn from each other and take away actionable insights that help advance our collective mission of safer schools and communities.
The Array of Experts
As we see it, there are three types of experts and the best approach is to learn from all.
- Scholarly experts have pursued a field of study and received advanced degrees (typically a Ph.D., Ed.D., JD, etc).
- Field experts are certified and/or accredited by a professional organization (such as PSP, LISW, LCSW, NCSP, CTM, Esq., etc.)
- Practical experts have extensive experience in a position or industry and are regarded by others as highly knowledgeable
The Specific Topic
In the broad sense, the topic is always safety – physical and emotional safety of students, staff and the community. Our particular emphasis at The Briefings is on the ways we can prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies. The basis for this is our work developing the Standard Response Protocol and the Standard Reunification Method and The Briefings always include a half-day training on SRP and SRM.
Additionally, The Briefings bring to light, timely topics, new insights and fresh perspectives from our ever-growing network of experts and the ever-evolving world of public safety.
